When someone tells you that a product is
one percent fat and ninety-nine percent fat-free,
there’s a fair chance they’re fibbing.
Why would companies whose priority is
profit (not your health) do that?... amazing
Let’s look at normal full-cream milk for
example:
The experts tell us that milk is about
five percent fat because it contains about 4.9 grams of
fat per 100 ml. And if we were to calculate fat
percentages based on the weight of the product,
then they would be right.
BUT when we’re trying to lose weight and
fat, the weight of our food is not really the
issue; the energy (calories) contained in that
food are the key. If it was only about weight of foods
we’d never eat water melon.
For example: A 1kilogram (1000grams)
watermelon contains fewer calories (220) than a 60 gram
Mars Bar (265 calories). The real issue is how much
energy (i.e. calories) each gram of a particular food
represents. Just for your interest, a 1 kilogram Mars
Bar (not a totally horrible concept) would yield a lazy
4,417 calories and 183 grams of fat (verses 220 calories
and 0 grams of fat in the old watermelon).
Check this out:
FULL CREAM MILK – (supposedly 4-5% fat)
100 ml of regular milk contains 4.9 grams of fat
The same 100 ml of milk yields 79 calories
1 gram of fat contains 9 calories
If we take the 4.9 grams of fat (in the 100 ml
of milk) and multiply it by 9 (calories per gram) we
discover that 44.1 of the 79 calories (in 100 ml of
milk) come from fat…..
So what we discover when we calculate fat
percentage from calories rather than weight is that
full-cream milk is
actually about 56% fat
If you apply the same thinking to a
‘low-fat’ milk like PURA LIGHT START (advertised as 99%
fat-free) you will discover that it is actually about
18.3 percent fat (not 1%)
This logic can be applied to many
products including ice-creams, yoghurts, ‘health bars’ -
it’s very interesting when you explore it…

making easier next time you are shopping.
